This past fall/winter 2025 Fashion Month was an excellent time for lace skirt lovers.
Over at Chloé, designer Chemena Kamali served up a long, floaty version with a matching peasant blouse; the Gucci design team (working interim until Demna takes the lead) went for a few sassy little midis sans slips, a few oversized floral appliqués added for extra coverage. And let’s not forget about Saint Laurent: Creative director Anthony Vaccarello turned sweet, doily-like fabric into something supremely sexy by applying it to a see-through pencil skirt silhouette—layered to perfection with a broad-shoulder bodysuit, no less.
Then, of course, there was the scene outside the shows this past February and early March. Industry players were wearing all manner of netted, wedded, mesh, and tatted skirts by the droves; a direct result, no doubt of the look’s strong showing for the spring/summer 2025 season as well, with prime spots at Michael Kors, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Jonathan Simkhai last fall.
All of this is evidence enough that a lace-bedecked lower half is very much the look of the moment, and there are near-endless ways to hop on the bandwagon.
1. Leather and Lace
There’s a reason why these fabrics are such an iconic combination. The purposeful miss-match of the hard and soft textures reads ineffably cool. That feeling is really intensified in this example thanks to the addition of statement snakeskin boots and an oversized pair of shield shades.
2. Fancy Shacket
Where a gauzy blouse might seem like the more expected choice with this look, a boxy embellished shirt jacket (aka, the “shacket”) has a striking element of surprise. Its crisp cut also helps to balance out the softer, more fluid shape of the outfit’s lower half. File this one away for a date night for which you want to show skin but not, like, in an obvious way.
3. Sneaker Chic
Nowhere to go? No problem. Simply pair your lacy skirt with an oversized crewneck sweater and your favorite kicks (soccer shoes are an of-the-moment choice) for a playful and feminine formula you could easily deploy for running errands or, you know… killing a basket of giant fries and downing mimosas with your best friend at brunch.
4. Matchy-Matchy
When in doubt, you will always appear incredibly chic (not to mention cozy) by teaming a lace midi skirt with a slouchy sweater in a similar hue. Extra points for coordinating your hair to the separates as well, but it’s definitely not necessary.
5. Denim Darling
Think of this combination as a quirkier alternative to the aforementioned leather and lace mash-up. It still has a memorable tough guy-meets-girly thing going on, but is slightly more relaxed and unbothered, particularly if the jean top in question is a bit slouchy. You can always dress this by pairing up a bit with a pair of heels and a structured handbag.
6. The Long Game
A seamless way to approach a see-through lace skirt is to simply partner it with a shirt that fully covers your backside. A streamlined tunic is a particularly inspired choice for evening occasions as it feels more polished than a loose-knit or baggy tee—even if you finish the look with loafers and socks.
7. Swish Swish, Bish
Between its doily-like finish and mermaid tale silhouette, the feminine midi here could very easily come across as fussy. But if you throw a buttery soft chocolate brown bomber and big sunglasses into the mix? The finished product is still polished, but with just enough edge to stand out.
8. Chic Set
It’s the easiest play in the book: Invest in a lace skirt with a matching top and you’ll have a ready-baked outfit for special occasions. But if you want said ready-baked outfit to be extra amazing, you might want to look into finding a camisole and maxi set with the same breezy, free-spirited verve as this one.
9. Blues Baby
Haven’t you heard? Wearing skirts over pants is definitely back in the zeitgeist—and one of the most right-now ways to try the look is with straight-leg jeans with an asymmetrical see-through little something on top. To make this dissonant coupling seem really intentional, be sure to match one of the pieces with another item in your outfit (note the coordinating jacket here).
10. Cream Of The Crop
Because most lace skirts have some sort of peek-a-boo element to the design, you need to be strategic about where to show skin. This outfit is a master class in just that: Note how the maxi essentially has a full-coverage mini underneath and the sweater is just short enough to show off a sweetly scalloped waistband.
