With summer winding down and autumn on deck, the inevitable change in seasons calls for a closet swap. Cooler months mean wearing sweaters instead of t-shirts and shrugging a cardigan over our tank tops to combat the chill, but while fall is heavily associated with seasonal pieces like oversized sweaters and functional yet stylish outerwear, we’d argue that the bottom half of our wardrobe isn’t enough of a conversation.
There’s a fair amount of chatter around jeans and trousers when temperatures start to drop, but dialogue centered around skirts quiets down. This is a major fashion misstep, as skirts can (and should) be a mainstay in your wardrobe year-round - and fall skirt outfits, especially, can run the gamut.
When piecing together an outfit (for fall and beyond), remember that the final product is less about the actual skirt and more about how you style it alongside other seasonal pieces. For example, you can pair a satin maxi with a crisp white fisherman’s knit, or wear a pleated tennis skort under an oversized sweater to add a feminine contrast to the roomier top. Taking this season’s trends into consideration can also help spark inspiration, noting that autumn 2025 standouts include animal prints, rich textures, and the classic knee-length A-line.
Leather Looks

If leather jackets are edgy, leather skirts are provocative, in the best sense of the word. They’re sexy and moody, but can be styled in such a way that reads romantic. For a fall skirt outfit, we love the added sex appeal of a one or two-buttoned-up cardigan with a high-waisted leather number to show a bit of skin, but you also can’t go wrong streamlining a black leather maxi skirt with pointed-toe, heeled boots, and a second-skin-tight black turtleneck.
Soft Suedes

Suede skirts are vastly underrated, and it’s a travesty. Suede, like leather, is an ideal material for the cold weather months; it’s especially popular in footwear. While true, it’s less durable than traditional leather, making it susceptible to environmental stains and moisture, suede is warm and textured, adding a level of depth to your ensemble.
Romantic Lace Midis

We’re seeing a lot of lace-meets-mesh pieces for fall 2025, including skirts. The see-through hem is sexy, showing a trace of leg, while the delicate floral patterns are quintessentially romantic. Go bold by pairing the fairy tale-esque item with an animal print (as depicted here) for loud contrast, or embrace the romance by sticking to an equally sweet color palette.
Timeless Pencil Styles

The pencil skirt is a classic style that has stood the test of time for a reason: Its straight-and-slim fit highlights curves with a chic sophistication. But don’t be fooled into thinking this type of skirt is best suited for the workplace; it's multifaceted. With various hemlines, embellishments, and even the occasional slit or cutout, pencils can create a myriad of fall skirt outfits that speak to a variety of styles.
Dash Of Denim

No matter what anyone tells you, denim skirts are always in style. They make a great alternative to your everyday jeans because they serve the same purpose, just in a different format. They come in all different lengths, but we especially love minis and midis for autumn. With the former, you can add patterned tights and a bootie, and with the latter, you can opt for fold-over socks, a loafer, and a crew neck sweatshirt.
Cool Cargos

Cargo skirts were popping up all over the street styles of fashion month, and we’re not mad about it. (More pockets? Yes, please!) For whatever reason, however, many people find this utilitarian aesthetic intimidating. Trust us when we say, you can rock it, especially for autumn. We’d argue that cargo skirts make utility fashion more wearable because they give the look a feminine touch, so lean into the softness and soften it up further with embroidered cardigans and heels.
Flannel Reimagined

When you think “flannel,” do you envision checkered button-downs, 90s grunge, or apple orchards? Same. But let’s put the oversized lumberjack-but-make-it-fashion style top on the back burner for a second and swap flannel shirts for flannel skirts as we head into fall 2025. Thanks to oversized everything, knit fabrics, blanket scarves, and the like, our top half is more than covered in the warmth department come autumn. But when blustery forecasts become the norm, a flannel skirt will protect your stems from the chill, too. Add tights to the mix if you’re opting for a mini cut, plus knee-high boots for optimal warmth as we head into late fall.
